I instantly loved Albert Wilde: Quantum P.I. – from a non-cat perspective, but as a film fan and someone who dotes on comedy – especially when the opening scene refers to the city as dirtier than a dog’s asshole.

Credits are the usual go-to when writing about a game, but as the title takes a ton of inspiration from the classic black and whites of yesteryear – well, some 80-odd years back, the credits roll at the beginning and amusing from the outset. Well done, beyondthosehills.

We’re then introduced to the hero of Albert Wilde: Quantum P.I. – Albert Wilde – a feline detective hard on his luck that had to find a way to pay back the bookie he owes money to. It’s not just whiskey that plagues this dick, but it’s his gambling woes, too.

Entering a back alley with a secret entrance, we meet Rudy, the moose and try to strike up a deal on how to pay him back. What’s so great about this title is the use of the inner monologue, in a Jon St Jon gruff voice, but when the animals speak, it’s in their ‘native tongue’. Very funny. The dialogue trees are also presented in a DVD menu like list, which was interesting.

What is perhaps unusual about the game is its 4:3 ratio, black and white aesthetic to resemble the era, and head bobbing from the first-person perspective. Remember: this is a cat walking on its back legs. The subtleties in this demo were great.

Alas, this is the demo for Albert Wilde: Quantum P.I., so it had to come to an abrupt end, but in that time, we see a murder scene, gambling, an ensemble cast, cat dancing, expletives and underground gangs that hang out in the sewer. I really can’t wait to get my paws on the full, filthy adventure, and if you want to know what you get if you mix a bit of Chicken Police with Stone, you might end up with this…
