An English Haunting Walkthrough

It's been a while since the last one, so here's An English Haunting walkthrough and 100% achievements to help complete this excellent point and click adventure.

An English Haunting Walkthrough

It’s been a while, but as the Steam Next Fest winds up and reviews have been put to the side, it was time to write An English Haunting walkthrough, what with it being the most recent point and click adventure I’ve completed – a game by Postmodern Adventures.

As always, exhaust the conversations wherever possible. This is only a suggestion, but perhaps look up the bit you’re stuck in rather than following this from start to finish. You can do that if you like. A complete list of the achievements is at the bottom, briefly explaining how to get it. Story-based achievements aren’t covered as they’re unmissable and come with progression.

If you’ve stumbled upon An English Haunting walkthrough by accident, you can jump to the review instead.

After the intro, head into the double doors and speak with Dean Carter. Outside, talk with Mr Cook to unlock the Red Lion as a location and inspect the statue for future reference regarding a newspaper clipping. Go back into the lecture room and interact with the skeleton to get the arm, the cabinet next to it to get acid, and the chalkboard to get the eraser. Head to the world map and go to Dorset Street.

When the landlady leaves, interact with the switch on the wall and use the arm on the lamp. Read through the rules to the left of room 4 to get the good tenant achievement (keep clicking through until it drops), use the key on the door, and then go inside. Interact with the pigeons at the window for the rats of the sky achievement, then look at the desk to get the notebook. Look at the shelf to get some reel (combine it with the acid to clean off the rust), and get the lamp from the trunk to the left.

Next, go to Professor Moore’s home. Outside, dip the eraser into the bucket. Go to the Red Lion and head inside. Look at the picture frames to the far right to get a caricature of Ward. Speak with everyone in the bar, notably the patron on the bottom left, to get a glass.

Go outside and talk to the first prostitute, Ruth, repeatedly to unlock the Ruth la Douce. After speaking with Kate, go into Donavan & Fletchers. Repeatedly press the bell (5 times) to unlock the behave like a gentleman achievement, then look at the noticeboard to the right to get a number. Speak with the clerk and find out about Benwell Street. Go back outside and show Kate the caricature of Ward to get the do you know this man? achievement. Inspect your prototype to get a glove. Look at the left cask outside the bar and use the glove, followed by the glass. Give the wine to Kate, and use the map to go to Westmore Theatre.

Speak with the doorman, then once you have the match, go to B.A.S.S. Combine Ward’s caricature with Moore’s photo, and then ring the bell to the left of the room. Use the image of Moore on the portrait wall, then speak with Carson and tell them you’re a member, then go inside. Return to the university and talk with Collins on the bench. Give him the card from the newsroom, then return to B.A.S.S. and use the flute. Look at the matchbox in your inventory and place it on the radiator to the left of the doorway to dry it out. Next, speak to Westmore.

Use the world map to go to 34 Benwell Street. Speak with the man, then the boy, give him the eraser, and head inside the house. Combine the match with the lantern and use it. Use the copper wire with the prototype and place it on the table. After the cutscene, use the apport on the bucket outside Moore’s house for a question of hygiene achievement, then return to the university.

Go to Dean Carter and hand him the apport. He’ll give you the watch, which you can exchange with Westmore at the B.A.S.S. You’ll now need a date, so go to Tim outside Moore’s home and say you are looking for a piece of news. At the newsroom, ask about the seance and provide the following information:

  • The Morning Herald
  • 19th December
  • 1906

Return to Westmore and tell him the answer is Charles Darwin. Then, go to the theatre and give the note to the doorman. After all the dialogue, pick up the blueprints in Ward’s workshop and interact with each part to get your ‘mission’.

Go to Florence Cook’s and watch the show. Afterwards, interact with the furniture at the centre of the screen in the background to get a business card, and then go to William Crookes’ residence to exhaust the dialogue, then on to the photo studio. Speak with the mourners, then head on to St. Giles.

Look in the cask to the left of the bar to obtain a coin. Attempt to go in the bar and when the doorman asks why, say it’s none of their business, followed by you need to see Paddy. Inside the bar, inspect the pickle jar, then talk to Cillian on the left to meet Paddy. After the chat, investigate the spittoon for the bet slip and go to the docks.

Speak with Henry repeatedly to get the sad story of Hobblin’ Henry achievement, then speak with the thug by the boy until you get the marbles. Go to Silas Bennet’s, and, after being introduced to Thomas Lester, go into his office and use the marbles on the paint in the centre of the room.

Leave the building and walk to the right into the bookstore. Read through the books at the back of the room for five different achievements. Also, interact with everything in the bookstore, notably the far right shelf, repeatedly until the Grand Super Horror achievement drops (this was the hardest achievement, in my opinion – it took ages to work it out :P) and then to the clerk to complete the Jebediah Bishop’s Quiz Show achievement. I cheated and manually looked up the titles before the game was released. The answers are as follows:

  • The Danube
  • Nevermore
  • The Vampyre
  • Its creator
  • A house
  • Clay
  • Miles and Flora
  • The Demeter
  • Charles Dickens
  • A mummy
  • Mary
  • Archbishop of Canterbury
  • Forty years old
  • Percy Shelley
  • The burial of the rats
  • Alan Campbell
  • 150 years
  • The Monk
  • The Thing in the Hall
  • Doctor Price

At the photo studio, place the marbles in the corpse and interact with the camera. Get the flowers from the mourners and go to the university. Give the pickles to Mr Lee to open them, then return to the docks. Knock on the first door twice to say you have the lucky charm, then hand over the violets. Inside, open the pickles onto the food, and then give the bet slip to the bookmaker. Walk to Paddy and hand over the cash.

Return to Crookes’ residence and combine the business card with the envelope, then swap it for the one on the tray. Return to Florence’s and interact with the people, cage and screen to trigger the cutscene and then use the flask on Florence to obtain the ectoplasm.

Now, head to the photo studio to meet Mr Wood to get the plates. Once received, return to Ward’s workshop. Give Beatrice the plate and ectoplasm, then return to Silas’ area, go to the ticket booth to the left of the screen using the penny found outside Giles, and keep watching the films to unlock the Edward Keller achievement (nod to Nightmare Frames). Go back to Silas’ office and meet Oskar. You’ll then head up North for the Scarlet Stone.

The Scarlet Stone

Walk off the screen to use your new map and go to the Cromlech. Look in the hole to the left to get the mirror, then back to the world map and go to the path and look at the sky to make a wish achievement. Next, go to the lighthouse and talk to the lookout to find out about the cave, then head straight there to pick up a mushroom, then back to the lighthouse. Use the mirror on the dog, then place the mushroom on the table. Make sure to take the mallet off the sleeping lookout.

Go inside the lighthouse and use the controls, setting it to ‘North’. Back to the cave and inside, use the mirror on the wall. Then, once you have the telescope, return to the point where you unlocked the sky achievement. Use the telescope on the reflection and head in that direction via the map.

At the camp, use the mallet on the box and, after the dialogue, walk through the black forest. This is not like Monkey Island, which has a set route to walk, so keep walking. You should find the sacrifice scene, then fumble your way back to the camp to battle it out with Price. Once at the workshop, trigger the light switch.

Sir Doyle

Keep talking to the students at the university until Dean Carter shows up. After speaking with him, go to Dorset Street and talk to the beggar, then knock on the door. Speak with the beggar, Rupert, once more, then go to Scotland Yard, exhaust the conversation, return to Rupert, and then go back to Scotland Yard. Look to the left of the gates in the bushes at the asylum to get an umbrella, then talk to the guard until you obtain a blanket. Walk to the right, throw the blanket over the wall, interact with the brick using the umbrella, and then climb over by clicking on the wall.

Inside, speak with the nurse, interact with the documents, and then take them out of the bin once thrown. Use the ink stain on the bust to the right. Head North and interact with the gramophone for the Cast me off discourteously achievement, and then interact with room 32 for the

Carmilla the Cannibal achievement. Back to the table, take the music box, then return to the spot where the janitor was and use the box on the crack to obtain the spider. Use this in room 33, pick up the key from where the gramophone was, and enter room 31.

34 Benwell Street

After the dialogue, interact with the Box of Revelations and keep doing so each time Ward asks. Leave the basement and, after encountering the spirit, interact with the crack and take the rattle. Check on Doyle in the basement, walk to the right of the hallway, and get the rosary from the furniture on the far right. Go to the upper floor and go to the first door, the sewing room. Interact with the trunk and then take the scissors.

Leave the room, then go back inside for the sewing room achievement. Use the scissors on the rosary and combine them with the rattle, then go into the next room to see Ward. Use the rattle on the poltergeist, then everything else falls in to place. Enjoy the ending!
