Sensational Stamps! Celebrate 80s/90s Gaming With The Royal Mail
I only really cover news that interests me as I didn’t start this out as an up-to-date news site, but my personal place on the interwebs to review games. Of course, that evolves through time and interest and I’m a little more clued up than I have been.
In this case, it’s not DLC, PlayStation Plus monthly releases or upcoming games for 2020, but all about stamps. That’s right: stamps. Postage stamps to me are as appealing as arse tattoos: doesn’t do anything. Other than in the olden days when I had to send something by snail mail, my last encounter with a postage stamp was probably as Bernard in Day of the Tentacle Remastered. You know the bit.
Yesterday I was going to post this little piece I saw by one of my favourite publishers growing up, Team17, but later got an email from another beloved haunt, Bitmap Books. You see, they have collaborated with Supple Studio to produce a special edition collection of stamps celebrating some classics of yesteryear.
All these games are now deemed retro and these lucky spotty teens are able to experience the games through PSN, Game Pass and a few titles like Gods Remastered on the Nintendo eShop. For crusties like me, it’s a nice bit of nostalgia forever immortalised in stamp form. Whether you collect them or not.
The full list of titles are as follows:
- Elite
- Dizzy
- Lemmings
- Micro Machines
- Populous
- Sensible Soccer
- WipeOut
- Worms
With the exception of Elite, these were all titles I played back in the day, and each and every one of them is from a British publisher, the write up by esteemed editor Julian Rignall. If you used to read the mags of yesteryear or the more recent publications by Bitmap Books, you’ll be familiar with the name.
At the moment the stamps are available for pre-order but will be released, along with some Tomb Raider themed mini-sheets on the 21st January 2020. You can buy them directly from Royal Mail (not an affiliated link. My non-existant solicitor told me to type that).
