Chronos Before the Ashes is the latest from Gunfire Games and THQ Nordic – a prequel story to Remnant: From the Ashes.

Taking control of a young hero enlisted to defeat an ancient evil, but to do so, you must embrace a mysterious labyrinth of brutal combat. Death is frequent, but not the end.

Unlike a game such as Dark Souls, each time you die, your hero will age. While it can’t be much fun having a geriatric dashing around a maze dragging a claymore, each added year brings wisdom and arcane powers. Like real life.

Chronos Before the Ashes is an atmospheric RPG focusing on ‘a hero’s lifelong quest to save their homeland from a great evil’. It’s a fascinating concept with the ageing element, but does that put a time limit on completion, or do you end up starting with a boy and ending up with Gandalf?

Key features include:

  • Adventure RPG – Refreshing combination of Adventure Game elements and RPG mechanics.
  • Deep Combat – A variety of weapons, abilities, and powers are available to the player in the pursuit of their quest.
  • Unique Aging Mechanic – Every time the player dies they age one year. Players must adapt to their advancing age as they progress throughout the game. You will begin your adventure young, nimble, and quick, and end your time in the game wise and more attuned to magic.

Here’s some moving pictures. Heads up: Chronos Before the Ashes looks great, but the trailer doesn’t do it any favours.

Gunfire Games have based this on the VR exclusive Chronos, only now it’s for the PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One and Stadia, if it’s still around the 1st of December 2020 release date.
