Dread Nautical Out Now

Dread Nautical Out Now

Considering the number of disasters that are associated with cruise liners, I have an understandable fear of them but could be persuaded to give Dread Nautical a chance.

One of the keywords in this strategy game is Lovecraftian. Though I don’t claim to be an expert, there’s something about Howie’s novels that resonate, though I do grow tired of the Cthulhu mythos.

Dread Nautical, from Zen Studios, is a turn-based rogue-like where you are on board the ship Hope.

That’s ominous.

The aim of the game is survival; finding other survivors, locating food rations and avoiding the supernatural powers that seem to exist on board.

There are four characters promoted in the game:

  • Hatano Kenichi – a former Yakuza enforcer, reluctantly picking up the katana once more.
  • Miraje – a top performer, not realising she’d be performing for the dead.
  • Fargo Drexler – a private eye veteran supposedly on holiday, but roped into the ship’s shenanigans.
  • Vivian Nussbaum – a gamer. They suck.

Despite the tone, the art style is very upbeat and colourful and not what you’d expect, considering the themes.
