Dune Gets The Go Ahead From Funcom

Dune 2 was one of the games vital in getting me hooked on strategy titles in the age of the Amiga. Now, with the success of the little known movie based on Frank Herbert’s saga (you may have heard of it?), a new game is in the pipeline.

Securing the rights way back in 2019, the project has gained traction not only from the renewed cinematic interest in the sci-fi tale, but there has been a €1.6 million grant that Funcom and NUKKLEAR have been awarded for developing it.

Dune will take inspiration from Funcom’s Conan Exiles and an online multiplayer survival game. Whether that will include an offline option or not remains to be seen, but it’s exciting news nevertheless.

As the Dune open-world survival game is the most ambitious project we’ve ever undertaken at Funcom, having skilled and reliable partners is an absolute must. With NUKKLEAR we have just that. We’ve benefited particularly from their expertise in vehicular-based gameplay, but I know them as highly skilled and creative game developers in general.

But enough with the praising of one another – when will we see the game? Patience! It’s in development so early days, but be assured that Dune isn’t a phase and will likely have a huge fanbase irrespective of the recent cinematic appeal. This is potentially epic…
