Granblue Fantasy Versus Out Now

While businesses are closing down and there’s so much uncertainty in the air based on the current climate, it’s encouraging, perhaps distracting that games are still coming out, keeping us occupied while in lockdown. One surprise title out now on PS4 and PC is Granblue Fantasy Versus.

Published by Marvelous Games, the same team who brought us Dead or School, Granblue Fantasy Versus is the highly anticipated fighting game by Cygames and developers Arc System Works. 

You might be more familiar with Arc System Works’ other titles such as Dragonball FighterZ, and the BlazBlue and Guilty Gear series. If you haven’t played any of the latter two and are a beat ’em up, do check them out.

As for Granblue Fantasy Versus, it’s probably the closest you can get to playing an anime right now. Cutscenes are frequent but elegantly cut with the action; not straying too far away and creating a spectacle for the sake of it. Then again, if you don’t like extravagant fight scenes, maybe this isn’t for you as this type of game turns it up to 11 from the outset and further intensifies your hangup about having lousy hair (these characters have it in abundance – as much as Code Vein).

Touted as a fighting game, Granblue Fantasy Versus relies on an RPG mechanic – a feature prominent in the mobile versions of the game. Scanning over some of the already available write-ups, it appears that Granblue Fantasy Versus is one of the most accessible beat ’em ups about, so that prioritises it as one to play against my mum. She still thinks she’s better at Mortal Kombat that me, just because of button mashing.

Granblue Fantasy Versus is out now in Europe and Australia, both physically and digitally and already is DLC heavy with lots of new characters.

Rather than an exhaustive list of each character pass, you can expect additional character sets, colour variations and avatars. The digital release is also available in two formats: Digital Character Pass Set and Digital Deluxe Edition.
