Asked the question: can a thief become a Hero? My response would be ‘No. Put the thieving bastard in shackles’. But it’s rhetorical in Hero-U Rogue to Redemption.

We’ve seen the redemption story before (no titles come to mind, however), but this one is different. First of all, it’s the story of Shawn O’Conner. Keen to get into the Thieve’s Guild, he’s made an offer to enrol in the Hero University to become an honourable Rogue, if there is such a thing.

Not just a clever name, but Hero-U Rogue to Redemption tells the origins of becoming an expert in the Rogue Class (great class!) as you learn the tools and tricks required in the Hero University of the title. But was it a coincidence that he was chosen?

The second reason why the story in Hero-U Rogue to Redemption is different from the rest is that it’s a game from Transolar Games. Despite this being their first game under the new independent studio, it was founded by husband and wife team Lori and Corey Cole who were behind 1989’s Quest For Glory by none other than Sierra On-Line.

If you’ve read more than one post on this site, you’ll know that I’m a big point and click fan and Sierra and LucasArts were two of the more prominent storytellers of my childhood. To say I’m excited about this one is an understatement.

Anyway, this isn’t a personal blog, back to Hero-U Rogue to Redemption and the features:

  • A charming fantasy story, set in the same universe as the acclaimed Quest for Glory series, that changes based on player decisions and play style.
  • Humorous dialogue and pun-filled descriptions that will delight fans of fantasy writers like Terry Pratchett and Piers Anthony.
  • Open-world exploration with a real-time day/night cycle that has hints of Persona and The Sims. There’s much more happening in Hero University’s hallowed halls than you’ll see in one playthrough!
  • Hybrid adventure/RPG gameplay with role-playing elements woven into the story and puzzles.
  • Optional turn-based combat — seek it out for an RPG experience or stealthily avoid it to stick to the adventure.
  • Supplement Shawn’s skills with an optional elective (Magic, First Aid, or Science) — but only if he passes his tests.
  • Controls and UI optimized for Nintendo Switch — play in either handheld or console mode, using the touch screen or Joy-Con controllers.
