If you've been counting, YCJY Games' previous title, Post Void, is well over 8,000 overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam, so their next venture, a nostalgic RPG named Keep Driving, has a lot to live up to. It's not a great start that they're using an old-school Volvo.
In fear of being cancelled for a controversial opinion, this style of car has notoriously been reserved for History teachers and as fodder for the curt, pithy remarks made by Clarkson. Why the heck does this look so good, then?
For starters, Keep Driving is a tale for the open road; picking up hitchhikers, working odd jobs, customising and repairing one's car, and mapping a suitable route around the country. It's also the early 2000s, and in your defence, this is your first car. Key features include:
- A procedurally generated pixel art world to explore one road at a time.
- A nostalgic early 2000s setting with an emphasis on the analogue.
- Use turn-based ‘combat’ to solve situations (like getting stuck behind a tractor).
- Pick up misfits, oddballs and lost souls as you go.
- Featuring a killer soundtrack by local indie bands.
- Multiple endings to unlock when you return to the road.
- Inspired by Oregon Trail II, FTL, Two Lane Blacktop, Paris Texas, Jalopy, Gloom Haven, The 7th Continent, and the developer’s lives.
You won't have to wait long for this particular road trip, as Keep Driving is coming to Steam Next Fest for you to kick the tyres, fiddle with the mirrors, then take for a spin.
