As an advocate for learning, I can’t help but bring to your attention the upcoming Kana Quest for the Nintendo Switch, released by Whitethorn Games and developed by Not Dead Design.

Don’t be fooled into thinking the hero of this story is Kana. This is a Japanese learning game teaching folk to read hiragana (one of the three writing systems in Japanese, and arguably the most accessible).

Instead of drilling vocab, Kana Quest takes place over 300 handcrafted levels and 13 worlds, building up one’s understanding of the language in a fun, but at-your-own-pace manner.

Key features include:

  • Match and Learn: Puzzles and lessons for all skill levels! Kana Quest was designed for anyone to enjoy, no matter your level of Japanese.
  • Double the Fun: Know how to read Hiragana already? No problem! Swap between Hiragana and Katakana at any time to add to your knowledge of the Japanese language!
  • No Tests, No Problem: Unlike other educational games, Kana Quest features ZERO pop quizzes so that players can learn in an interactive and engaging way!
  • Kawaii Kana: Beautiful sprite art and catchy music will accompany players on their language-learning journey.

Here’s the trailer:

Already available on Steam, Kana Quest will be playable on the Nintendo Switch from the 28th of March, 2023. べんきょう します!
