Leisure Suit Larry Wet Dreams Dry Twice Review

Leisure Suit Larry Wet Dreams Dry Twice is a no-brainer for me, for Larry Laffer is family. I’ve banged on about this before that my first introduction to the deviant hero was Leisure Suit Larry – Looking For Love (In Several Wrong Places).

Even back then, these games were dated in their views, but they were self-aware and knew that they were cringeworthy. That didn’t stop the legion of hairy palmed males hopping on for a glimpse of flesh. It never really happened, though.

After a couple of changes to the franchise with the godawful PS3 title I refuse to mention, developers CrazyBunch and Assemble Entertainment jumped in and continued the Sierra saga with Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don’t Dry, and they smashed it.

Now we’re onto the next (mis)adventure with our deal ol’ pal Larry as a direct continuation of the Epilogue we got to play as Faith Less. In Leisure Suit Larry Wet Dreams Dry Twice we find out that Faith may still be alive, so Larry abandons his wedding (don’t ask), and goes to find her.

I’ve covered a few of the changes in my coverage of the demo, but to skim over it, the Timber app is no more, but now you have more useful apps such a To-Do list and the Blueprint app to craft essential items.

The latter plays a significant part in the game, even though there aren’t many items on the menu, you will have to do a hell of a lot of backtracking to collect the right items. You also need to decipher what it is you need as Larry never gets the actual thing but an ‘it’ll do’ alternative.

Pi is back – your poor AI trapped in a smartphone having to listen to Larry’s quips or taking dick pics to post on Instacrap. He hasn’t changed whatsoever, and without getting all academic about it, the joke is often on him. I’m biased though, I’ve had the theme music as my ringtone for some time now.

Cum On Over

Leisure Suit Larry Wet Dreams Dry Twice is a modern attempt at the Carry On series. I don’t know what the American equivalent is – perhaps American Pie or Road Trip? You know, those cumming of age films that so many people are offended by these days.

One of the recurring commentaries that CrazyBunch make is on society itself. Nobody is safe, and on that basis, there’s no discrimination – it’s like a South Park episode, but despite the smut and stereotypes, Leisure Suit Larry Wet Dreams Dry Twice knows that Larry is a fossil in today’s age, but has lots of fun with it.

I’ll rarely laugh out aloud a game, but I genuinely was giggling like a schoolboy at the humour – it’s well written; the timing is just right, and the delivery is spot-on. If you don’t like nob jokes, then you might find it infantile, but despite my alleged sophisticated humour, I’ll always chuckle at a cheeky innuendo.

Yet, again, Larry is the (loveable) clown here, and while the women are portrayed as bimbos in aesthetics, they’re often smart, strong independent women. Beyoncé’s gospels paid off. The characters seldom entertain his idiocy, but unlike the original point and click titles, Larry does get the win quite often.

Spread Your Seed

We’re no longer in New Lost Wages and instead, an archipelago of quirky characters with split personalities, cannibals, secret spies and a nemesis that appears to be modelled on PSY of Gangnam Style fame. This particular character was a little annoying, and the Asian stereotype may offend some.

The playable locations are initially quite limited, and the duration of play is predominantly going back and forth to solve a few puzzles and combining absurd objects. Before long, you’ll get a new app that allows you to shift to various islands, and the characters and challenges do not disappoint.

Some of the women you encounter look like characters inspired by R. Crumb. Still, my favourite would have been Swingle – a jester-like small person obsessed with cave diving and other pervy references and is a complete oddball. Yet again, it had me laughing aloud, and this deviant made Larry look quite normal.

Some of the puzzles are quite mad and will have you climbing the walls as you frantically combine objects such as obtaining an ominous yellow liquid, scattering seeds and using a sausage for a DIY project.

Finishing It Off

Initially, I thought that Leisure Suit Larry Wet Dreams Dry Twice was a little on the easy side with too many hints, I surmised that this would be a quick playthrough. Fortunately, as mentioned above, some of the puzzles don’t make sense and have you edging on the line of frustration, but distracts you when you see another cock-shaped statue or Larry spraying a breath spray. It breaks the spell a bit.

On that note, it’s encouraged to exhaust the dialogue options as while they don’t lead to solving a puzzle, getting an item, or having Larry dip his wick; the banter is just brilliant. I stood at a piano requesting songs from the resident comedian (it makes sense when you play) and I was there for a while going through all the options.

Leisure Suit Larry Wet Dreams Dry Twice features a protagonist with a very dated view, but I could relate to a lot of his comments. Larry isn’t politically correct, but neither is he intentionally offensive. He only has one thing on his mind: to get laid, and he’ll do everything within his power to do so.

If you were a fan of the last adventure, you’ll love this. The humour is even better, the social commentary is brilliant, but more importantly, there are enough boobs in this to keep you away from Twitch, you filthy animal. Just play the demo – if you like that, you’ll love this.
