Misc A Tiny Tale is a title that I hadn’t heard of until the Steam Next Fest, but glad I stumbled upon it. It’s a delightful platformer from Tinyware Games that was (and currently is) available on Steam as a demo.

You play Buddy – a tin can robot who may already have the heart that a certain person from a certain Land of Oz lacked – he’s a lovely human being. Er – robot?

It’s a bit like a fusion of all those robot CG films you may have seen in the past, and some of the best 3D platformers, as the world in this brief demo is brilliant.

Buddy has a partner in crime, Bag Boy, who’s a bit of an oddball character. We see him in the introduction and can see that he’s the black sheep of the bunch. Still, with Buddy’s innocence, he embraces him as the true friend he is, and they’re off for an adventure.

In the Misc A Tiny Tale demo, you explore Buddy’s surroundings, learning that he has an Inspector Gadget-like rotor blade tucked away in his head and will later earn a paperclip that he can use in battle.

The introduction is very much like one from one of those classic children’s shows like Bagpuss. It’s all very charming and detached from the harsh realities of other platformers like that horrid plumber chap who jumps on mushrooms.

Got Any Scrap?

The niceties continue as Buddy meets others in the community and offers to help them find items they’ve ‘misplaced’ This is actually code for “nick me something, will you? I can’t be bothered”.

That’s precisely the kind of fuel Buddy needs, and before you know it, you’re unlocking secret areas that house energy bars and get some brownie points from the local totty.

The controls and camera angles are excellent. Often, in this sort of game, the angle gets a bit creative, and you can’t work out where you are. Granted, you mostly occupy open spaces, but it works great.

I’m looking forward to this one, but I have no idea when it’s coming out as it doesn’t say on the Steam page. Just short of phoning up the developers and saying, “Oi! When’s this out, mate?”, we’ll have to wait. But the wait looks worth it. Another Astro’s Playroom, minus the DualSense?
