MythBusters: The First Experiment Is A Fan Thing, Right?

MythBusters: never seen a single episode. My dad’s seen them all and swears they’re great shows, but it’s one of those things I’ve never had time to watch. Games, on the other hand, I have time for.

MythBusters: The First Experiment from Byte Barrel is based on a show I’ve never seen where you have to create experiments to determine whether something is essentially true or false, but doing so in the most elaborate way and increasing the ratings, money, penis extensions – whatever.

The game is made up of mini-games in the form of blueprints. They aren’t entirely clear, nor were they that much fun either. This was one of those rare games that I got fed up with early on. The UI isn’t intuitive, and it’s quite ugly too. That comment might be aimed more at the show; it just did nothing for me.

There will be plenty of engineering-based problems with some quirky puzzles that are sometimes satisfying but very brief. You’ll pick a crew using a deck – each with its quirks, and then you’ll go on to fund each show with the experiments and budgets. After the mini-games, you’ll source the stores’ equipment and then build your experiment.

Why am I writing this up then? I was fortunate enough to get an early copy, so I have a commitment to covering, seeing as I used the code. From my perspective, this might be more geared to fans as it’s not a standalone first-person simulator that I’m accustomed to. And, to make it crystal clear, outside of point and clicks, these tend to be the games I gorge on. Not the case with MythBusters: The First Experiment.

Considering the game is out next month, I’m going to try and fit in some time to watch the shows to see if that changes my tune, come back and revisit this preview. However, I’m just keen to get this off my desk as I couldn’t get into it whatsoever. My apologies, but check out some other opinions as I’m clearly not getting it.
