Space Channel 5 VR Kinda Funky News Flash! No Moonwalking

Space Channel 5 VR Kinda Funky News Flash

Forget waiting for Shenmue 3 and Final Fantasy VII remake, Space Channel 5 VR Kinda Funky News Flash! is the game you need. If you’re a VR dance fan, that is.

Originally released on the ultimately Sega Dreamcast, the franchise disappeared with the end of the platform (unless you count Space Channel 5: Part 2 from 2002), but now the title rears it’s sexy snake hips for once last dance, only this time – the PSVR. That’s right, Space Channel 5 VR Kinda Funky News Flash! is a VR game – spoiler!

Before your parents even met, a small portion of gamers was playing another not-so-popular female lead, Ulala. I’m referring to Lara Croft – was never a fan in those days. Ulala is a reporter working for Space Channel 5 but ends up getting involved in a staged battle against aliens orchestrated by her boss to boost rankings.

How better to defeat the alien invasion? Through dance. Who else better to represent a dance-off, but a cameo from Michael Jackson a.k.a. Space Michael. This was before all that happened with you-know-what, but back in the day, it was a big deal. Whether there will be any cameos in the new game, we’ll have to find out but we’re unlikely to see the Moonwalk.

In Space Channel 5 VR Kinda Funky News Flash! official site here, you take the role of a rookie under the wing of Ulala who will show you the ropes, rather, footsteps to succeed. As a PSVR, you will be able to use the Move controllers and as with any dance format, burn off a bit of energy in the game – there’s even a calorie tracker included, among other features.

It’s being developed by Grounding Inc in Japan, who are made up of former Sega developers – some of which were involved in the original game back on the ol’ Dreamcast. What can we expect to see in the game? They’ve given us some bullet points:

  • Story Mode: Join Channel 5 as a rookie reporter alongside Ulala
  • Arcade: Play an introductory mode recommended for VR beginners
  • Trial Dance: Play 100 dances in a row in this exercise and endurance mode
  • Viewing: Watch the story again through a third person perspective and multiple camera angles
  • Friendopedia: View character biographies
  • Dressing Room: Change Ulala’s outfits as you unlock them through the game
  • Calories: Track the calories burnt during gameplay
