What a start to the week; two posted articles before a second helping of coffee and bourbons (biscuits, fools) and I have another bit of news in the form of a Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo release date.

You mean you haven’t heard of Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo? Me neither, but with a name like that, it’s a sin to ignore, so, I looked it up and can say that this looks like a promising indie shooter.

There’s a lot going on screen. Just how this sort of shooter should be

Apparently it’s not an entirely new title as Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo existed on Steam before, but after much jubilation, the one-man band that is Ste Wilson (half of the team that make up the developer outfit, Bare Knuckle Development. Another awesome title) has put together this Turbo Edition for those of us who haven’t experienced it.

Ste writes the theme tune, sings the theme tune (under the moniker Electric Fan Death) – basically everything from the ground up and having checked the trailer I’m building up to, it looks like a nice addition to my ever-growing Switch catalogue.

I don’t discriminate the triple-A’s from the indies, but have to say this takes me back to the days of the Amigo 500 (yawn, here I go…), and when the soundtracks really stuck with you in a good way. None of this 73-piece orchestras with a billion choirs, or post-apocalyptic folk-rock but full-on synth-pop. Yeah, boy. The visuals too remind me of something by Team17 back in the day.

In summary, Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo is a take on of the classic shoot ’em up, or the broader label, shooter. Much like the original Asteroids but with a hint of a top-down version of Super Stardust, it’s looking to be feature-packed with so many unlockables that it’s most likely one of those quick pick-up and play titles that take an age to master, but I’m all for it.

Here’s what I know from the horse’s mouth (BKD’s website):

  • 15 unlockable spaceships each with their perks
  • 5 gameplay modes
  • Among those play modes is the obvious single player, but local two-player modes as well
  • A plethora of power-ups, plus weapon upgrades and perks
Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo release date 14th January 2020
Split-screen local play? Yes, please

That’s just some of the very many features which I’ll be looking at should I get a copy to review anytime soon. There’s a story involved too, but I’ve got to hold out for some stuff to include in the review…

Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo release date is the 14th January 2020 for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Steam. I’ll be holding out for the Switch version as I think it will be perfect on the go.
