No matter how many variations we get of the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, the tale never gets old, and The Crown of Wu will be a welcome addition. If Journey to the West doesn’t ring any bells, perhaps you’ve heard of Dragonball? Protag Goku was based on him.

Anyways, Red Mountain is developing, with Meridiem Games on publishing duties for this third-person action-adventure about the classic tale, for PC and consoles.

In The Crown of Wu, you play as Sun Wukong, on the lookout for the great crown stolen by Zhu. It’s set in a future-past fantasy world following the Monkey King’s capture and subsequent escape, uncovering a decadent world in ruins, corrupted by the crown.

Key features in The Crown of Wu include:

  • The game world – Immerse yourself in a great land that is both ancient and new. Inspired by Chinese mythology and created to tell a new story of Sun’s journey from anti-hero to hero, this is a world where legend meets reality.
  • Attributes and abilities –  Harness the powers of air, fire, earth and lightning. Each of your powers gives you a way to work with the environment or against your enemies. Attack with Air, Fire and Lightning. Defend with Earth. Summon your powers to defeat enemies and cross dangerous chasms.
  • Combat System – Discover a fresh and simple combat system that grants you incremental powers as you travel through this terrible land to solve the mystery of the stolen Crown. Get ready to jump, run and parkour your way through this new world as you solve intricate puzzles and overcome increasingly complex trials as you progress through the levels.

An early trailer says The Crown of Wu will be for PC (Steam), PlayStation and Xbox in 2023, but the deets here say Winter. Let’s hope that’s the 2022 side of the fence, eh?
