Legendary Crime Novel The Evil One Gets Greenlit

The Evil One is so ‘fresh’ that there’s no official trailer from RedDeer Games yet, nor are there any screenshots. Reluctantly, we have to make do with this promotional image and the interview further down.

So, why even mention it? The Evil One is a ‘brutal action-adventure game’ based on a legendary crime novel by Leopold Tyrmand. I’ve never heard of it, or him, but I bet my local bookshop has.

However, reading through the Top Secret material (the game is currently in development), the story has been hailed as ‘the most popular crime story of the People’s Poland (PRL). Could be good?

It might be worth noting that The Evil One is an anti-hero that brings crime to justice in 1950s Warsaw. A noir tale that is steeped in a dark and disturbing atmosphere, it’s piqued my interest.

The Evil One is often called the Polish Batman – this comparison has already shown the novel’s potential. Tyrmand dedicated his book to the city of Warsaw and we also intend to show the city that rises from its ruins. For an international audience, it will be called Bad City and will often be mentioned as a City by a capital C. Fans of the novel have nothing to fear – we will certainly convey the unique atmosphere of the underworld, streets, gates, and buildings of the capital, and at the same time we will ensure accessibility for players from outside Poland.

There’s no release date for The Evil One yet, but it’s expected to release on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and the Nintendo Switch at some point, offering around 7-10 hours of gameplay.

The end.
