Before reading anything about the material, I immediately noticed the screenshots as the game I covered some time ago, a French animation style and inspired by social realists. But look past the visuals for one moment, and it has a very striking premise.
Set in World War II, you play Asya – a 10-year-old girl separated from her family and working as a common worker in a forced labour camp. When the opportunity arises, she’s able to escape and make a run for it across Germany and Poland to get back home.
Told from the perspective of a child, the mechanics are unlike any other title from the era. Yes, Torn Away is about survival, but it’s done in a non-violent way as Asya surveys her surroundings to avoid being captured. I understand that the story draws upon real child diaries from the period.
We’re proud to show Torn Away to the world, since we believe that in these difficult times, our dignity, humanity, and family are the only real things we need to hold on to. Our everyday struggles differ very much from what Asya experiences, but her journey should help us understand what matters most in our lives.

It’s a very bleak setting, but it’s a story that needs to be told, and from the examples so far, we can expect Torn Away to play on the heartstrings. Just hearing the sirens at the beginning of the trailer sets the mood. There’s a slight Memory Of Us feel to it, irrespective of the art style and a title that’s been on my radar for some time.
Interesting to note, the emotional soundtrack was created by Vasily Kashnikov, who worked on Pathologic 2. If you’ve played it, you’ll appreciate what a powerful mood it can evoke.
