Shenmue meets Dark Souls was the comparison to begin with after watching the Xuan Yuan Sword 7 announcement trailer, and scrolling down the comments, see that exact statement.

Yes, it’s a bit lazy to compare games that way, but it gives us a rough idea of what to expect with this upcoming title for PS4 and Xbox One. Fans in the West may already be familiar with the series and eager for it to make an appearance, well, here’s it is.

For over 30 years, the series has been running and now Eastasiasoft are bringing over Softstar and Domo Studio’s Xuan Yuan Sword 7. Drawing in an ancient China landscape mixed with both Chinese history and mythology, this game is bound to be a huge hit.

It’s a fantasy tale set in a new Xin Dynasty. This is a standalone, which is perfect for those unfamiliar with the game’s legacy. You play Taishi Zhao, a noble swordsman armed with the Elysium Scroll, who can slow down time and absorb monsters, as well as alter the environment.

It’s almost like a spiritual successor to the superb Onimusha series, only ‘across the pond’ and set way way back – over 2000 years ago at the end of the Western Han rule.

Enough history lessons, here’s the Xuan Yuan Sword 7 announcement trailer:
